چکیده

Detention ponds are currently accepted as stormwater best management practices (BMPs) in coastal South Carolina. These ponds are typical catch basins for stormwater piped directly from impervious surfaces in many residential and resort areas. Nutrients often concentrate in the ponds and contribute to eutrophication within the ponds and downgradient estuaries. A supplementary BMP is proposed that would augment nutrient attenuation in these urbanized watersheds and subsequently reduce the potential for nutrients to enter adjacent estuaries. A created wetland was designed to border an existing detention pond on Kiawah Island, SC, providing

Replacing natural wetlands with stormwater management facilities: Biophysical and perceived social values.

Urban expansion replaces wetlands of natural origin with artificial stormwater management facilities. The literature suggests that efforts to mimic natural wetlands in the design of stormwater facilities can expand the provision of ecosystem services. Policy developments seek to capitalize on these improvements, encouraging developers to build stormwater wetlands in place of stormwater ponds; h...

Nitrogen Removal by Stormwater Management Structures: a Data Synthesis

A comprehensive synthesis of data from empirically based published studies and a widely used stormwater best management practice (BMP) database were used to assess the variability in nitrogen (N) removal performance of urban stormwater ponds, wetlands, and swales and to identify factors that may explain this variability. While the data suggest that BMPs were generally effective on average, remo...

Human and environmental health risks and benefits associated with use of urban stormwater

For stormwater harvesting to achieve its full potential in mitigating water scarcity problems and restoring stream health, it is necessary to evaluate the human and environmental health risks and benefits associated with it. Stormwater harbors large amounts of pollutants and has traditionally been viewed as a leading cause of water-quality degradation of receivingwaters. Harvesting stormwater f...

The Hydraulic Efficiency of Simple Stormwater Ponds

This paper investigates the hydrodynamic characteristics of nine stormwater pond configurations. These ponds represent an extension of earlier work by Persson (1999) who proposed the thirteen pond configurations currently used as a guide in the hydrodynamic component of the Cooperative Research Centre for Catchment Hydrology (CRCCH) Model for Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualisation (MUSI...

Mitigating Urban Wetland Impacts on Downstream Water Resources

Wetlands in older urban areas have often been integrated into stormwater management systems and exhibit severe degradation from receiving decades of untreated and uncontrolled urban runoff. Vegetative diversity is often poor and dominated by a few hardy species such as cattail (Typha latifolia) or reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea). These wetlands may also be affected by legacy impacts fr...
